About Holley Mead

Some people can use words, some notes or paint to express their feelings of a special place. Fabric has been my medium for expression since 1972.

The colors, patterns and texture of cloth are my palette. I am continually motivated by nature, landscape, the seasons, color and a sense of humor. More than an actual place, I am interested in the feeling a place evokes in me. A piece of fabric will often start the piece and set the scene. The technique I use is called appliqué, where the cloth is applied and then stitched with a zig-zag stitch. A fabric collage where layers of color and texture bring richness and depth.

In the larger quilts I like using  a combination of patchwork and appliqué to add interest and hold them together. The geometry can create water, light, and shadows without being literal. visual direction to keep your eyes moving around the quilt, as in the magic and wonder of nature.

I work on commission with people to design and create images small and large that will be heirlooms. As well as quilts, pillows and wall hangings, I have done clerical stoles and chancel pieces as well as an 80 ft curtain with a Deer Isle Village scene for the Staten Island Mall.
