Balsam Pillows
Over the 50 years of quilting, I keep returning to making balsam pillows and the small format of 11”x7”. They are fabric collages, of different places, flowers and seasons, birds and animals from the familiar Deer Isle land and seascapes.
They are filled with the Balsam Fir needles that grow all around in the woods here. It is a scent that “brings you back”. It asks to be held and squeezed and lasts forever. I like to use fabrics that capture the feeling of a place thru an outrageous sunset or a quiet, cool misty morning, or how a crow might feel flying in a sky full of stars.
